Statement on the updated mask mandate guidance
Members of Seattle Student Union are appalled at the new mask mandate guidance from Governor Inslee.
This new guidance states that by March 12, masks will no longer be required in places like stores and schools. This is appalling. Even though the CDC loosened the requirements, some experts have said that wearing masks in schools should still be required. Since students are still very close to each other, masks help protect all students, especially immunocompromised ones.
The removal of the mask mandate is a highly political tactic, to keep democrats elected in office. Moderate democrats and republicans are pushing to eliminate the mask mandate, to garner more votes. It's time they listened to the most vulnerable, which say that now is not the time to remove the mask mandate.
We call on Governor Isnlee and/or OSPI to reinstate a statewide mask mandate in schools. Stop politicizing our safety. We demand that the Seattle School Board not waver from their universal masking requirement.
We call upon members of the community and local elected officials to publicly oppose this.
